Delhi Vehicle Status Check Online: RC, Challan and PUC Status (2026)
Delhi Vehicle Status Check Online: RC, Challan and PUC Status (2026)
A delhi vehicle status check online takes only a few minutes and covers the three things Delhi owners need to watch most closely: the RC record, pending challans, and PUC validity. All three can be checked on the national Parivahan portals using just your registration number, so you do not need to visit a Delhi RTO for a routine status enquiry. This guide gives the exact steps for each check, explains Delhi’s RTO codes, and covers the enforcement rules that make a pending status unusually costly in the capital.
The short version: use Know Your Vehicle Details on the Vahan portal for the RC record, the e-Challan portal for challans, and the PUC check on the Parivahan portal for pollution certificate validity. Do all three together, because a vehicle can look fine on one check and be blocked on another.
Delhi Vehicle Status at a Glance
Delhi number plates begin with the state code DL, followed by an RTO code, a series, and a number, for example DL1C AA 1234. Delhi’s RTOs include DL1 (Mall Road), DL2 (IP Estate), DL3 (Sheikh Sarai), DL4 (Janakpuri), DL5 (Loni Road), DL6 (Sarai Kale Khan), DL7 (Mayur Vihar), DL8 (Wazirpur), DL9 (Dwarka), DL10 (Burari), DL11 (Rohini), DL12 (Vasant Vihar), DL13 (Surajmal Vihar), and DL14 (Shahdara South), among others. The code on your plate tells you which RTO holds your file, which matters when you need a counter visit.

Pay pending challans
Pay any pending challans on the e-Challan portal and save the payment receipt.
Check PUC validity
Check PUC validity on the Parivahan portal or in the VAHAN vehicle record, and renew at an authorised centre before expiry.
Review the full status
Compare RC, challans, PUC, hypothecation and insurance against the healthy checklist, and resolve any block before driving.
Follow up on problems
If a record is missing or wrong, recheck after 24 hours, then contact the testing centre, buyer or RTO as applicable.
How to Check Delhi RC Status Online
- Go to the Vahan portal and choose Online Services, then Vehicle Related Services, or open Know Your Vehicle Details directly.
- Enter your Delhi registration number, for example DL1CAA1234, without spaces, and fill in the captcha.
- Submit the form and read the record: owner name (partially masked for privacy), registration date, vehicle class, fuel type, chassis and engine numbers (partially masked), fitness validity, insurance validity, and RC status.
- Check the RC status field first. Active means the registration is valid. Expired, suspended, or blacklisted needs action before you drive, and our RC status check guide explains each status in detail.
If the record does not load, double-check the number for typing errors, especially confusing characters, and confirm you entered a Delhi series plate. A vehicle registered in another state will show under that state’s record, not Delhi’s, even if it is currently driven in the capital.
How to Check Pending Challans for a Delhi Vehicle
Delhi challans are issued through the national e-Challan system and by Delhi Traffic Police cameras, so check them on the e-Challan portal:
- Open the e-Challan portal and choose Check Challan Status.
- Search by vehicle number, entering your Delhi registration number and the captcha.
- Review every challan listed, including its date, offence, amount, and status, paid or pending.
- Pay pending challans on the same portal and save the payment receipt.
Do not ignore pending challans in Delhi. Under the Supreme Court’s September 2026 order, unpaid e-challans can block RC renewal, duplicate RC, address updates, fitness certificates, and PUC issuance, and can blacklist the vehicle on Parivahan. Our guide to that order explains the full consequences, and our pay challan guide gives the step-by-step payment flow. If a challan looks wrong, our wrong challan dispute guide explains how to challenge it, and Delhi drivers should also know about the reported grievance-first dispute process and the 50 percent deposit rule for court appeals covered in our Delhi challan rule post.
How to Check PUC Validity for a Delhi Vehicle
PUC validity deserves its own check in Delhi, because enforcement here is stricter than in most states. Check it on the Parivahan portal’s PUC section with your registration number, or through the PUC certificate details shown in the VAHAN vehicle record. Our PUC certificate check guide covers the full process.
The reason for extra care: driving without a valid PUC can attract a fine of up to Rs 10,000, Delhi has run focused PUC enforcement drives, and the Haryana NCR no-PUC-no-fuel rule next door shows the direction of enforcement across the region. In Delhi, GRAP stages can also restrict certain older diesel and petrol vehicles when air quality worsens, so a Delhi owner should check both PUC validity and emission norm together, not PUC alone.
Reading Your Delhi Vehicle Status: What Good Looks Like
| Check | Healthy result | Action needed if not healthy |
|---|---|---|
| RC status | Active, with fitness and insurance validity in date | Renew or resolve the block before driving. |
| Challans | No pending challans, or all paid with receipts saved | Pay pending challans, or dispute wrong ones promptly. |
| PUC | Valid certificate, expiry date in the future | Get a fresh PUC test at an authorised centre before expiry. |
| Hypothecation | No financier shown, or loan closed with NOC filed | File the hypothecation termination if a closed loan still shows. |
| Insurance | Policy valid and matching the RC record | Renew before expiry, because a lapsed policy breaks the chain. |
Delhi-Specific Rules That Affect Your Status
Two Delhi rules catch owners by surprise. First, the National Green Tribunal’s age-based restrictions in the National Capital Region mean older diesel vehicles (over 10 years) and older petrol vehicles (over 15 years) face restrictions regardless of RC status, so an Active RC does not by itself guarantee the vehicle can be driven in Delhi. Second, GRAP restrictions, which activate by air quality stage, can temporarily restrict certain BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel vehicles, with fines for violations, as covered in our revised GRAP rules post. Check both before assuming a Delhi vehicle is fully road-legal.
Common Problems for Delhi Owners
If challans appear for a vehicle you sold, the transfer is the likely cause, and you should contact the buyer and the RTO promptly. If the PUC check shows no record, the testing centre may not have uploaded the certificate yet, so wait 24 hours and recheck, then contact the centre with your test receipt.
If the portal shows no record at all for a Delhi plate, verify the number carefully, including the series letters, and try again after some time, because portal sync delays happen. Persistent failure across several days is worth an RTO visit with your RC and identity proof.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I check Delhi vehicle status without visiting the RTO?
Yes. RC details, challans, and PUC validity can all be checked online on the Parivahan portals using your registration number. An RTO visit is only needed when a record needs correction or a service needs to be filed.
What documents do I need for a Delhi vehicle status check?
Only the registration number for the online checks. Keep your RC, insurance, and PUC details handy for comparison, and carry identity proof only if you later need an RTO visit.
Why does my Delhi vehicle show a challan I never received by SMS?
SMS delivery can fail if the mobile number on the RC record is outdated. Update it following our mobile number update guide, and check challans online regularly rather than relying on SMS alone.
Does an Active RC mean my old Delhi vehicle can be driven?
Not always. Age-based NCR restrictions and GRAP stage restrictions can apply even when the RC shows Active, so check both the RC status and the current Delhi vehicle rules before driving an older vehicle.
How often should I check my Delhi vehicle status?
At least once every few months, and always before buying or selling, before a long trip, and after any challan or enforcement drive in your area.
Where do I pay a Delhi traffic challan?
On the official e-Challan portal, echallan.parivahan.gov.in, using the vehicle number search. Avoid paying through links in unsolicited messages, and verify the challan details on the portal before paying.
