Maharashtra Vehicle Status Check: RC, Challan and Tax Status Online (2026)
A maharashtra vehicle status check takes only a few minutes when you use the right portal for each question. You can verify RC details on the Vahan portal, find pending e-challans on the e-Challan portal, and confirm road tax status through the same national system. Maharashtra runs its vehicle records on the national Vahan and Sarathi databases, so the record you see online is the same record the RTO office sees.
Maharashtra Vehicle Status Check: RC Details on the Vahan Portal
The most reliable way to run a maharashtra vehicle status check for registration details is the central Vahan portal. Open the Parivahan Sewa portal, go to vehicle-related services, and choose the “Know Your Vehicle Details” option.
Follow these steps:
- Open the Vahan portal and select “Know Your Vehicle Details” under vehicle-related services.
- Enter the full registration number, for example MH 12 AB 1234, with or without spaces.
- Solve the captcha and submit the search.
- Read the result screen carefully: registration date, owner serial number, maker and model, fuel type, RC validity, insurance validity, PUC validity, fitness validity for commercial vehicles, and any hypothecation entry.
Compare every field with the physical RC. A hypothecation entry the seller never mentioned, or expired insurance, is exactly what this check is meant to catch. Our VAHAN status check guide explains each field on the result screen in more detail, and our RC status check guide covers registration status in depth.

Checking Pending e-Challans for Maharashtra Vehicles
Maharashtra issues challans on the national e-Challan system, and unpaid challans can surface later when you renew a fitness certificate or transfer ownership. To check on the e-Challan portal:
- Go to the e-Challan portal and choose “Check Challan Status”.
- Search by vehicle number. You can also search by challan number or driving licence number.
- Enter the captcha and submit.
- The portal lists every pending challan with the violation, the amount, the date and place of the offence, and the issuing authority.
If challans show up, pay them online using UPI, net banking, or a card, and download the receipt immediately. A challan can take 24 to 48 hours to clear after payment, which is a sync delay, not a second fine.
Always run this check separately from the RC check before buying a used vehicle. A clean RC with pending challans means the seller’s unpaid fines can become your problem during transfer. For how challan portals differ across states, see our guide to state-wise challan portals.
Road Tax Status for Maharashtra Vehicles
Private vehicles in Maharashtra generally pay a one-time tax at registration, while commercial vehicles pay periodically. To verify or pay online, open the Vahan portal, select “Vehicle Related Services”, then Maharashtra and your RTO. Choose “Pay Your Tax”, enter the registration number, and the portal shows the applicable tax mode and any amount due. Pay online and download the receipt, and use the “Reprint Tax Receipt” option later if you lose it.
The portal calculates the amount automatically, so you never need to guess. If you are bringing a vehicle from another state, remember the 12-month rule: a vehicle used in Maharashtra for more than 12 months needs re-registration here, with road tax paid in Maharashtra. Our guide to the Maharashtra out-of-state vehicle check drive explains the documents, the NOC process, and the fines in detail.
Maharashtra RTO Codes: Which Office Registered Your Vehicle
Maharashtra has a wide network of RTOs, each identified by a unique code in the registration number. The major codes are: MH-01 Mumbai South (Tardeo), MH-02 Mumbai West (Andheri), MH-03 Mumbai East (Worli), MH-04 Thane, MH-05 Kalyan, MH-12 Pune, MH-14 Pimpri-Chinchwad, MH-15 Nashik, MH-20 Aurangabad, MH-31 Nagpur, MH-43 Navi Mumbai (Vashi), and MH-48 Vasai.
The Maharashtra Transport Department’s own site also lists these services and offices, and most citizen services have moved online through Vahan and Sarathi: fresh registration and RC download, ownership transfer, change of address, duplicate RC, hypothecation addition or removal, fitness certificate services, road tax payment, commercial vehicle permits, and fancy number allocation. Driving licence services run on the Sarathi portal, where you select Maharashtra as your state.
Common Problems and How to Fix Them
Mobile number not linked to the record: update it through the Vahan portal or at your RTO before trying any OTP-based service, because everything else waits on that OTP.
Very old vehicles show incomplete records: older entries were sometimes digitized imperfectly. If your old vehicle’s record looks blank or wrong, visit the registering RTO with the original RC so the entry can be corrected.
Name mismatch after a transfer: an ownership transfer never completed on paper is the most common cause. Both buyer and seller have roles in the Vahan transfer flow, so check the transfer status and complete it if your old vehicle still shows your name.
Challan paid but still showing as pending: wait 24 to 48 hours and keep your payment receipt. If it still shows after that, use the e-Challan portal’s transaction verification option with your challan number and bank reference.
Out-of-state vehicle used in Maharashtra for over a year: you need an NOC from the original state and re-registration in Maharashtra, with Forms 27 and 28 in the transfer flow. Do not ignore it, because enforcement drives specifically target long-staying out-of-state vehicles.
How can I check Maharashtra vehicle status by registration number?
Enter the registration number on the Vahan portal’s “Know Your Vehicle Details” page. It shows RC validity, maker and model, insurance and PUC validity, and hypothecation status for any Maharashtra-registered vehicle.
How do I check pending challans on a Maharashtra number plate?
Use the e-Challan portal’s “Check Challan Status” with the vehicle number. It lists all pending challans with violation details and amounts, and you can pay them online.
Can I pay Maharashtra road tax online?
Yes. Tax can be paid on the Vahan portal under “Pay Your Tax” after selecting Maharashtra and your RTO, with an immediately downloadable receipt.
Which RTO code is Pune, and which is Nagpur?
Pune is MH-12 and Nagpur is MH-31. Mumbai South (Tardeo) is MH-01, Thane is MH-04, and Pimpri-Chinchwad is MH-14.
What should I check before buying a used vehicle in Maharashtra?
Check RC validity and hypothecation on Vahan, pending challans on the e-Challan portal, insurance and PUC validity, and fitness validity for commercial vehicles. Match the chassis and engine numbers on the vehicle with the RC, and check whether an out-of-state vehicle needs re-registration.
