mParivahan App Guide: Digital RC, DL, Challan and PUC in One App (2026)

The mParivahan app is the official mobile app of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, built by the National Informatics Centre, and it puts your digital RC, driving licence, challan check, PUC status and vehicle lookup in one place. Developed by the government, the app pulls live data from the national VAHAN and Sarathi databases, so the documents it shows carry the same legal validity as the physical cards. This guide explains what the app does, how to set it up, and when it is enough versus when you still need the Parivahan web portal.

What Is the mParivahan App and What Can It Do?

mParivahan is a free app available on the Google Play Store for Android and the App Store for iOS. It is the mobile face of the Parivahan Sewa system: the same national vehicle and licence databases that power vahan.parivahan.gov.in and sarathi.parivahan.gov.in, packaged for your phone.

The main features of the mParivahan app include:

  • Virtual RC and virtual DL. Save your Registration Certificate and Driving Licence on the phone with a QR code. Traffic police accept these digital documents during checks because they are verified live against the official database.
  • Challan check and payment. Look up pending e-challans by vehicle number, challan number or DL number, and pay them from within the app.
  • Vehicle details by registration number. Enter any Indian vehicle’s number to see its registration details, insurance validity, PUC expiry and tax payment status.
  • PUC and insurance status. The vehicle record shows whether the Pollution Under Control certificate and insurance are current.
  • Offline access. Once your virtual RC or DL is saved, it can be displayed without an internet connection, which matters at remote check posts.

One honest limit to know upfront: the app displays official data but does not change records. You cannot use it to apply for a duplicate RC, renew a licence or transfer ownership; those applications still go through the web portals. The app is a viewer, a wallet and a payment point, not an application desk.

How to Download and Set Up mParivahan

Setting up the mParivahan app takes a few minutes and needs only your mobile number.

Step 1: Download the official app. Open the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and search for “mParivahan”. Install the app published by the National Informatics Centre. Be careful with copycat apps that use similar names; only the NIC-published app connects to the real database.

Step 2: Register with your mobile number. Open the app, enter your mobile number, and tap Register. You will receive an OTP by SMS. Enter it to complete the registration. The number you register with is your app account; it does not have to be the number linked to your RC.

Step 3: Explore the dashboard. The home screen shows options for vehicle search, DL services and challan services. Before adding anything personal, try the vehicle search with any registration number to see how the data looks.

How to Add Your Virtual RC and Virtual DL

This is the feature most owners install the app for. Adding documents ties them to your phone and generates the QR code that makes them verifiable.

Adding your virtual RC:

  1. On the dashboard, tap “Add to Dashboard” or the vehicle option.
  2. Enter your vehicle’s registration number.
  3. Enter the last five digits of the chassis number and the engine number, exactly as printed on your RC.
  4. Tap Verify. The app fetches the record from the VAHAN database and adds the virtual RC to your dashboard, showing owner details, registration validity, insurance validity and a verification QR code.

Adding your virtual DL:

  1. Tap “Add to Dashboard” and choose Driving Licence.
  2. Enter your DL number and date of birth.
  3. Verify with the OTP sent to the mobile number registered with your DL.
  4. The virtual DL appears with the licence classes, validity dates and QR code.

Checking and Paying Challans in the mParivahan App

The challan section is one of the most used parts of the app. You can search by vehicle registration number, by challan number if you have it, or by DL number for driver-specific challans. The result shows each challan’s date, the offence, the fine amount and whether it is pending or paid.

If a challan is pending, the app lets you pay it directly using UPI, debit or credit card or net banking, and generates a payment receipt you should save. This is the same national e-challan system that runs on the web at echallan.parivahan.gov.in, so a challan paid in the app shows as paid on the portal too. The full web-based walkthrough of that portal is here: https://vahandetail.com/check-echallan-status-online-parivahan-sewa-portal/

A note of caution that applies to every vehicle owner: the only safe places to check and pay challans are the official app and the official portals. Never install a “challan” file sent over WhatsApp or any third-party app claiming to clear fines. These are malware.

mParivahan App vs the Parivahan Portal vs DigiLocker

Many owners have all three and use them for different jobs. Here is how they divide up.

TaskmParivahan appParivahan web portalDigiLocker
Show RC or DL to traffic policeYes, with QR verificationNot practical on the roadYes, issued documents
Check or pay challanYesYes, at echallan.parivahan.gov.inNo challan functionality
Look up any vehicle’s detailsYesYes, at vahan.parivahan.gov.inNo
Apply for renewal, transfer, duplicateNoYes, via Sarathi or VAHAN servicesNo
Store non-transport documentsNoNoYes

The practical setup most drivers use is mParivahan for roadside checks and challan payments, the web portals on https://parivahan.gov.in for applications, and DigiLocker as a general document locker. When the App Is Enough, and When You Need the Portal

Use the app alone when you need to show documents at a check, look up a vehicle’s details before buying, or check and pay a challan. Switch to the Sarathi portal at https://sarathi.parivahan.gov.in for licence applications, renewals and duplicates, and to the VAHAN services on the Parivahan portal for RC applications, ownership transfer, tax payment and permit services.

If the app ever fails to fetch your record, the usual causes are a mistyped chassis or engine number, a record that has not yet been digitised in an older state database, or the mobile number not matching the one linked to the DL. Re-enter the details carefully, and if the record still does not appear, the web portal with the same details is worth trying before assuming the record is missing.

Is the mParivahan app a government app?

Yes. It is developed by the National Informatics Centre under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, and it pulls data directly from the national VAHAN and Sarathi databases.

Is the virtual RC or DL on mParivahan legally valid?

Yes. Digital documents shown in the app are legally valid across India, and traffic police accept them during checks. The app generates a QR code so the document can be verified on the spot.

Is mParivahan free?

Yes, the app is completely free to download and use on both Android and iOS.

Do I need DigiLocker to use mParivahan?

No. mParivahan works independently of DigiLocker. Both can hold your RC and DL, but the app is built specifically for transport documents and also handles challan checks, which DigiLocker does not.

Can I apply for a new DL or renew my licence in the app?

No. Applications such as new licences, renewals, duplicates and ownership transfers are done on the web portals (Sarathi for licences, VAHAN services for vehicle-related applications). The app only displays data and handles challan payments.

What should I do if the app cannot find my vehicle record?

Check the chassis and engine numbers for typos first. If they are correct, your record may not be digitised in the state database yet, or the portal may be temporarily down. Try the same lookup on the VAHAN web portal before visiting the RTO.
