Know Your Vehicle Details: Complete VAHAN Portal Guide

The “Know Your Vehicle Details” service on parivahan.gov.in (under Online Services) shows the complete official record of any vehicle registered in the VAHAN database — RC status, owner details, hypothecation, insurance and PUC validity, and more. Unlike a quick number-plate search, this service requires you to create a free Parivahan account and verify it with an OTP before you can look anything up.

This guide walks you through it screen by screen: where to find the service, how account creation and OTP login work, and how to read every field in the vehicle record.

What This Service Is (and Isn’t)

“Know Your Vehicle Details” is Parivahan’s authenticated vehicle lookup. Because you log in first, it returns the full VAHAN record — not the trimmed public summary you get from anonymous searches.

How it differs from the other lookups on the site:

ServiceLogin neededDetail level
Know Your Vehicle DetailsYes — account + OTPFull official record
Quick vehicle owner details lookupNoBasic public details
VAHAN SMS (07738299899)NoBasic fields via text message

Use this service when you need the authoritative record — verifying a used vehicle before purchase, confirming hypothecation before a loan, or checking the exact validity dates on your own documents.

Before You Start: What You Need

  • The full vehicle registration number (e.g. MH12CD5678)
  • A mobile number that can receive OTP SMS
  • An email address for account creation
  • A browser with pop-ups allowed for parivahan.gov.in

No documents need uploading, and the account is free.

Step 1 — Open the Service on Parivahan

  1. Go to parivahan.gov.in.
  2. In the main menu, click “Online Services”.
  3. From the dropdown, select “Know Your Vehicle Details”.
  4. The VAHAN citizen-services window opens. You’ll land on the login / registration screen rather than a search box — that’s expected, because this service is login-gated.

If the menu layout has changed, look for the service under the VAHAN section; the name stays the same.

Step 2 — Create Your Parivahan Account

First-time users must register before they can log in:

  1. On the login screen, click “Create Account” (or “New User / Sign Up”).
  2. Enter your mobile number and email address.
  3. Choose a password as instructed on the form.
  4. Submit the form — the portal sends an OTP to your mobile number.
  5. Enter the OTP to verify your number and activate the account.

Keep your login credentials safe; the same account works across Parivahan’s other citizen services (driving-licence services, challan payments, and more).

Step 3 — Log In with OTP Verification

  1. Return to the login screen and enter your registered mobile number and password.
  2. The portal sends a fresh OTP to your registered mobile number.
  3. Enter the OTP within the validity window shown on screen (resend it if it expires).
  4. On successful verification you reach the citizen services dashboard — a list of available VAHAN services.

If the OTP doesn’t arrive, check mobile signal, wait a couple of minutes, and use the resend option rather than creating a second account.

Step 4 — Run the Vehicle Search

  1. From the services list, select “Know Your Vehicle Details” (or the vehicle-search option on the dashboard).
  2. Enter the vehicle registration number in the search box — full number, no spaces (e.g. KA05MN4321).
  3. Complete the on-screen verification (captcha or confirm) and submit.
  4. The portal fetches the record from the VAHAN database and displays the full vehicle details screen.

Double-check the number before submitting: a single wrong character returns “no record found” or, worse, someone else’s vehicle. (For a quick no-login search, see our guide to vehicle details by number plate.)

Step 5 — Reading the Vehicle Record, Field by Field

The record screen is dense. Here’s what each section means:

Field / sectionWhat it tells you
Registration No.The vehicle’s official registration number — must match the number plate
Registration DateDate of first registration; compare with the seller’s claim and the vehicle’s apparent age
Owner Name & AddressRegistered owner’s name and address (visible here because you’re logged in)
Chassis No. / Engine No.The vehicle’s unique identifiers — physically verify these against the stampings on the vehicle
Maker / Model / ClassManufacturer, model, and vehicle class (e.g. LMV)
Fuel TypePetrol, diesel, CNG, electric, etc.
RC StatusActive, cancelled, suspended — must read Active for a clean vehicle
HypothecationShows the financer if a loan is/was attached; “N/A” or blank means no active hypothecation
Insurance ValidityInsurer name and policy expiry date
PUC ValidityPollution certificate number and expiry
Fitness ValidityFitness certificate expiry (mainly commercial vehicles)
Tax ValidityMotor vehicle tax paid-up-to date
RTO / Registering AuthorityThe RTO that issued the registration

How to use it as a buyer: work down the table and confirm (1) RC Status is Active, (2) chassis and engine numbers match the physical vehicle, (3) hypothecation shows no active loan unless the seller discloses one, and (4) insurance, PUC, and tax dates are current. Any mismatch is a reason to pause the deal.

Common Problems and Fixes

  • “No record found”: recheck the registration number for typos; very recent registrations can take time to sync into VAHAN. Retry after a few days.
  • OTP not received: check signal, wait 2–3 minutes, then use Resend OTP. Don’t create duplicate accounts.
  • Session expired / logged out: Parivahan sessions time out for security. Log in again — your search inputs aren’t saved.
  • Details don’t match the RC card: the VAHAN record is the system of truth for enforcement, but data-entry errors happen. Minor mismatches (spelling of owner name) can be corrected through your RTO; major ones (wrong chassis number) need an RTO visit.
  • Portal slow or down: VAHAN undergoes scheduled maintenance, often late at night. Retry during daytime.

Where is “Know Your Vehicle Details” on the Parivahan website?

Go to parivahan.gov.in → Online Services → Know Your Vehicle Details. It opens the VAHAN citizen-services login screen, because the service requires an account and OTP verification before showing the record.

Do I need to create an account to use Know Your Vehicle Details?

Yes. Unlike the anonymous quick searches, this service requires a free Parivahan account (mobile number + email), followed by OTP verification at each login. The login is what unlocks the full, unmasked vehicle record.

Is Know Your Vehicle Details free?

Yes — account creation, OTP login, and the vehicle search itself are free. You only need the registration number of the vehicle you want to look up.

What details does the full VAHAN record show?

The complete record: registration number and date, owner name and address, chassis and engine numbers, maker/model/class, fuel type, RC status, hypothecation (loan) details, insurance validity, PUC validity, fitness and tax validity, and the registering RTO.

The record shows a loan (hypothecation) the seller didn’t mention. What now?

Treat it as a red flag. An active hypothecation means a financer has a claim on the vehicle, and ownership can’t cleanly transfer until the loan is closed and the hypothecation is removed from the record. Ask the seller for the loan-closure / NOC documents, or walk away.

Can I download or print the vehicle record?

The service displays the record on screen; use your browser’s print function to save a copy for your files. It is an informational record — for certified extracts needed in legal matters, approach the registering RTO.

Bottom line: create one free Parivahan account, verify with OTP, and “Know Your Vehicle Details” gives you the single most authoritative vehicle record available online in India.
